20-20In an effort to improve the health and well-being of the Haitian population displaced by the January 12th earthquake, MOSCTHA brought together doctors, volunteers, community leaders and staff members to visit 20 camps in 20 days. In collaboration with ALA Dominicana, and HelpAge, MOSCTHA was able to ensure provisional shelter to nearly 2,000 people, distributing toiletry kits to 6,000 people and providing food for 3,000 camp residents of Léogâne, Port-au-Prince, and Petit-Goâve. In addition, MOSCTHA and its partner organizations achieved the difficult challenge of bringing, in just 20 days, primary medical assistance and psychosocial support to 5,000 elders, adults and children who lacked access to healthcare since the earthquake.
Drinking Water and Sanitation in Anse-a-PitreMOSCTHA, working jointly with La Fundacion Humanismo y Democracia (Humanism and Democracy Foundation), has forged a partnership to improve the quality of life for people of the Border Regions of the Dominican Republic and Haiti and peri-urban neighborhoods of Santo Domingo. The project, entitled Access Safe Water, aims to provide a cleaner environment and access to safe, clean water.
Teach a Man to FishWorking in conjunction with APPA, the Fisherman's Association for Environmental Protection of Anse-a-Pitre, MOSCTHA has forged a project aimed at improving the skills of fishermen in the community of Anse-a-Pitre in the Southeast province of Haiti. Many of the fisherman of the area, who are members of APPA, face difficulties that limit their fish output. Teach a Man to Fish has developed a training program for these fishermen which teaches fishing techniques and provides fishermen with basic fishing equipment kits. This project directly benefits 150 fisherman.
Cholera Prevention and TreatmentIn an effort to improve the living conditions of those most vulnerable, MOSCTHA, has been on the front lines, helping to curb the cholera epidemic in 10 encampments in the capital, 3 in Léogâne, 4 in Grand Goâve, 3 in Petit- Goâve, and 1 in Lester in the department of Artibonite. MOSCTHA has been distributing educational materials, such as flyers, brochures, and flipcharts to be used by local health promoters to capacitate the public, and Pur water tablets to purify drinking water. We have been educating illiterate citizens with physical teaching methods based on the information contained in the flyers and brochures. We have also been capacitating local school children so that they can later teach their family members how to prevent cholera. In addition to the information MOSCTHA is delivering to the population in the encampments and local communities, MOSCTHA is also preparing inter-institutional workshops with the hope of capacitating promoters from other institutions that are working in localities where we have no presence.
Earthquake ReliefMOSCTHA was one of the first organizations in Haiti after the earthquake hit. Since then we have provided countless tents, tarps, and mattresses, medical care via mobile ambulance to thousands living in earthquake-affected areas, and thousands of jugs of clean water for those affected by cholera. Utilizing our established infrastructure and relationships, with 50 Haitian-Dominican staff members and 125 volunteers working in Haiti, MOSCTHA has been able to reach more than 60 of the hardest hit areas, providing relief to more than 80,000 Haitians. MOSCTHA is providing the immediate relief while seeking long-term solutions to change conditions in Haiti for good.
12 Question CampaignIn 2009, MOSCTHA launched the web-based initiative, 12 Question Campaign. Working with renowned humanitarian photographer Talia Frenkel, MOSCTHA was able to introduce the masses to glimpses of rarely seen before images of everyday life in Haiti and the Dominican Republic and posed questions in hopes of igniting effective change on the ground.
